Melbourne's mains water is on the softer side by international standards, but that doesn't mean scale isn't an issue in showers. Long-term calcium build-up is visible on tiles and grout in most Melbourne bathrooms after a few years, particularly around shower heads and taps.
The visible white residue is mostly calcium carbonate deposited as water evaporates. It's cosmetic more than damaging, but it does hold onto soap residue and give bacteria and mould a foothold.
For grout specifically, hard-water residue makes cleaning harder and can mask early signs of grout failure. A grey stain that looks like discolouration might actually be a calcium film sitting on top of otherwise-sound grout.
For silicone, the same residue reduces the effectiveness of anti-mould coatings over time. It doesn't damage the silicone directly but shortens its practical cosmetic life.
The practical response is regular cleaning with a product designed for calcium removal, and scheduled reseals to renew the joint materials. Anything more aggressive (household descalers, strong acids) risks damaging the grout itself.
